The notification feature addresses important user notifications related to food waste issues and inventory expiration dates.
The wide topic we were discovering was food waste. We decided to focus on family households, how they manage their inventory, how they know what products will be thrown to a bin, how they prepare the meal schedule and create shopping lists.
We’ve done 2 rounds of interviews. For the first round our target persona was individual, working professional, and could have health issues.
After affinity mapping, I noticed that our users have key 4 themes - lifestyle, inventory management, preparation of food, and grocery shopping. There was a trend related to individuals being great managers of their time and food, health issues also indicates that a person will be considerate with grocery. We were looking for major issues that could indicate food waste, that’s how we come up with Family as our target audience.
Live alone in the city.
They have grocery shops near house.
Extremely organized because of health issues.
Have clear understanding what needs to be eaten.
Products are fully consumed because of preparations.
Not managing, just checking what I have and decide to eat this today or tomorrow.
Products rarely expired.
Something easy and quick to prep.
Knows what to prepare for next 1-2 days.
Not buying something extra
Time for shopping: 15-20 min, 4 times per week.
Products based on meals.
Almost daily shopping.
Bigger families need to handle everything in their head to consider every member
Tend to divide responsibilities between adults.
Inventory is managed in different area, products with short shelf life in a fridge, products with longer shelf life in shelves.
Looking at dairy products to check expired dated.
The people try to have a list of products that they buy each week based on their meals.
Every day breakfast, sometimes skip lunch, dinner at home or outside.
Go shopping few times a week, sometimes use a courier for delivery.
Go for outside dinner on weekend sometimes.

Annie work full-time as her husband. Sometimes it could be long hours. Annie with her family lives in suburb and try to plan their meals week ahead. Annie tends to divide responsibilities between adult members, prefers to have family dinners at least few times a week. She is concerned with food waste problem, also she wants to teach her kids live more sustainable life.
To spend less time for preparing meals on daily basis;
Consider everyone and make shared meals;
To prep meals from inventory and not create food waste.
A lot of time spent preparing meals.
The more people - the harder it is to manage inventory for everyone. Sometimes children will eat differently, so parents need to consider this when shopping for food. Don't want to prepare different meals for everyone.
Though we researched several apps to indicate that they target young people, we believe that meal and inventory management could be more beneficial to families. To conduct competitive research, we searched for apps which cover 1) inventory management; 2) meal plans; and 3) shopping lists. Here are some examples:
Instead of just one focus feature for our app, I chose to focus on flow that could really cover food waste problems.
The most important thing for us was to do the continuous flow for the users so they could move further within an app and improve all touch points with food at home.
Starting with Onboarding, we were clear with the main functionality of our app. After profile registration, Users can setup Family to engage with members later through the app.
We made a decision that "Home" as a separate menu tab could result in user confusion. And we chose the starting point for our users which is Inventory. Based on actual Inventory, our users could create Meal plans, choosing products that they already had or meals that need a bit of grocery shoppings.
After the initial screen with Inventory, users could go straight to the Meal schedule, browsing the recipes and adding them to plan for the week.
We want to encourage users to plan their meal beforehand, that’s why they have a weekly calendar where they can choose a meal and assign someone from a family who will cook it.
Based on scheduled meals, users could create a dedicated Shopping list which is our 3d tab in the menu.
My goal was to create a Setup Inventory functionality, think on Labels for Expiration dates for products, define Meal Preparation functionality, and finally draft Shopping list functionality.
Adding inventory, creating meal plans, and adjusting the shopping list to previous data should be simple, especially for new customers who were attracted by marketing campaigns. A clear Call-to-Action button is essential for higher conversion rates.
The data also adjusts to the changes that users do within their food through the app. It provides useful information when needed and suggests actions to preemptively answer questions. For example, an intuitive four-step onboarding process highlights how a family could be involved in the meal plan process.
help big families to manage meal plan and big shop lists in order to reduce food waste and make everyone happy with meals?
Lack of focus on products in fridge and shelves, missing out the expiration dates, hard to handle everything in your head what needs to be bought and prepared for the whole family.
This project was born out of our team's need and desire to organize meal management to reduce food waste. Based on our interviews and research, the 3-in-1 solution could definitely meet the market needs.
- Simplifying UX of Meal Planning functionality as it should be easy for users to plan the week ahead;
- Developing UX for Settings page
- Refining UI elements for the Shopping list page
- Conducting more interviews with our target audience - families
